Whenever you travel, you need to pack your essentials such as your passport, clothes, shoes, toiletries etc. Then there are items that are not so necessary but can come in really handy when you are away from home. Here is a list of some practical and creative extras that you can pack when going on a trip:
A smartphone: A smartphone can be used as an alternative to a number of travel accessories including GPS, maps, currency converter, translator etc. Just make sure that you have access to wifi in the place you are visiting, as most of the apps require an internet connection to work.
Travel adaptor: If you are a gadget buff or at the very least, have to charge your mobile phone or camera battery, then a universal travel adaptor is just what you need. Not all countries use the same plug point, so it is a good idea to bring a travel adopter along with slots for the most frequently used plug points. The adapter may not work in a different planet, but will at least allow you to charge your camera battery when you are in Kenya.
A multipurpose tool: Multipurpose tools such as Swiss knives are a lightweight and compact way of bringing your kit with you. You will have instant access to a jackknife, screwdrivers, pliers, mini scissors and a saw blade. Whether you want to make a speedy repair, or need some light to find your way through a dark place, a multipurpose tool is a must-have item for your vacation.
A small first aid kit: It is wise to bring a small medical kit especially if you are likely to be far from decent healthcare facilities. Go through your medical cabinet to see what you usually keep handy in your house. This should include both medical supplies and medications. You will be better off taking along everything that you normally buy from a drugstore.
Split rings: An excellent substitute to padlocks for your luggage is split rings that are similar to key rings you use for organising your keys. Not only are they easy to find but also inexpensive. They make an ideal product for preventing theft without the need to be alarmed about re-setting a padlock.
Entertainment: You may have plenty of things to see and do once you reach your destination, but you also need something to keep you entertained during the journey. Pack books, handheld game consoles or a portable DVD player to keep you occupied while travelling.
While travel and relaxation don't always go hand in hand, packing creative extras can make your journey much more pleasurable. Though packing light is advisable, everybody has some extras that they want to take along.
